Denali National Park highlights the true, unbridled nature of Alaska. There's no landscape like it outside of the Arctic and few places give you the thrill of seeing bear, moose, caribous, Dall sheep, and wolves (Alaska's Big Five).
With just one ribbon of road that meanders through 91 miles of the park, it is important that you choose the correct park tour: the Tundra Wilderness Tour. On the Tundra Wilderness Tour, you'll go 35 miles farther into the park, giving you an unsurpassed view of all of Mt. McKinley, not just the top.
Below is a comparison of the two park tours available at Denali National Park.
Natural History Tour
Duration: 4-5 hours
Distance Traveled into Park: 19 miles (72 miles from Mt. McKinley)
What's included: Expert narration, hot drink
Points of interest: Government Hill, Yanert Valley, savage River, and visible from Primrose Ridge (16 miles into the park) on clear days, the upper flanks of Mt. McKinley.
Tundra Wilderness Tour
Duration: 6-8 hours
Distance Traveled into Park: 53-62 miles
What's included: Expert narration, snack box, stunning scenery
Points of interest: Savage River, the "drunken forest" of Teklanika, Polychome Pass, pioneer history presentation at Savage Cabin, and weather permitting, the full vertical rise of Mt. McKinley from Stony Hill Overlook (62 miles into the park and 29 miles from Mt. McKinley - yes, that's 43 miles closer than the Natural History Tour). Watch for bears at Sable Pass, Dall Sheep at Igloo Canyon and moose all along the way. |
